No free water in Penang, says CM

GEORGE TOWN: Unlike Selangor, the Penang government has no plans to offer free water to the people.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said yesterday that Penangites were still enjoying one of the lowest water rates in the country.

“This is despite Penang having one of the highest consumption rates in the country.”

He said furthermore, there may be a tendency to waste, if water was to be distributed free.

Lim also assured consumers that there would not be any impending hike in water rates in the state.

“However, if the usage jumps astronomically, then we will have to slightly increase the rates,” he said.

Lim was asked to comment on the Selangor state government’s offer of 20 cubic metres of free water monthly to all householders in the state, starting from this month.

Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim had on Wednesday said the move to offer free water was timely as consumers were facing a higher cost of living due to the higher fuel price.
