SAPP hasn’t got invite to BN meet

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) said it has not received any invitation to attend Thursday’s emergency meeting of the Barisan Nasional supreme council.

“We have not been informed of any meeting nor have we received any invitation for it, as was normally done in the past,” SAPP secretary-general Datuk Richard Yong said.

He said as far the party was concerned, the stand taken by SAPP president Datuk Yong Teck Lee on having no confidence in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi remains as announced on Wednesday.

“We will wait and see the outcome of the Barisan meeting,” Richard Yong said, when asked about speculation that SAPP could be sacked from the coalition.

There are some within the party who have disagreed with the party president’s announcement, including deputy president Datuk Raymond Tan, who expressed disappointment over the no-confidence motion against Abdullah.

Former Petagas assemblyman Datuk James Ligunjang, who joined Umno from Upko, said he hoped the state Barisan government would not remove SAPP from the state administration.

“Any sacking of SAPP may not go down well with the people of Sabah and could invite serious repercussions in the next general election,” he said in a statement issued Thursday.

Ligunjang said that the Sabah rakyat might “severely punish” Sabah Barisan if this happens.

He said he supported what SAPP was doing, as well as other elected leaders like Umno’s Datuk Anifah Aman and Datuk Abdul Ghapur Salleh, Datuk Edmond Chong of Parti Bersatu Sabah and Datuk Wilfred Bumburing of Upko, for speaking up fearlessly on the interests of Sabahans in Parliament.
