KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday hit out at High Court judge Datuk Ian Chin, accusing him of “wanting to be popular with the present government”.
“It looks as if he was trying to curry favour with the government by demonising the previous prime minister, whom everyone know is the bete noir of the present administration.
“(Chin) knows that anyone who says something against me will be popular,” said Dr Mahathir at a news conference at his office at the Petronas Twin Towers.
Accompanied by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and armed with several files, Dr Mahathir said the “explosive judicial disclosures” were desperate attempts to deflect attention away from Chin over an “impending action”.
Dr Mahathir had alleged that there was a report of bias against Chin in a case he had presided over.
Chin had claimed, while hearing an election petition earlier this month, that Dr Mahathir had threatened judges back in 1997 to rule in his favour, and that the former prime minister had sent them to a “boot camp”.
To that, Dr Mahathir questioned why ministers and the prime minister “rushed to accept his (Chin’s) story as the absolute truth while the other judges have denied it”.
“His revelation had nothing to do with the election petition that he’s presiding over and no one knows why he brought it up.” – NST
