FORMER premier Mahathir Mohamad and his son Mukhriz said yesterday they believed there was evidence of homosexual conduct on the part of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim. The two politicians are bitter enemies of Datuk Seri Anwar.
Mr Mukhriz said he was not surprised by the fresh allegation of sodomy, and called Mr Anwar a ‘known liar’. The accusations about others, he said, were to distract attention from the fresh sodomy charges. ‘Anwar Ibrahim panicked and ran to the Turkish Embassy. That is itself an admission of guilt,’ he added.
Tun Dr Mahathir wrote in his blog yesterday that all 10 judges who heard the sodomy case of Mr Anwar and adopted brother Sukma Darmawan Sasmitaat Madja in 1999 had found evidence of sodomy.
Although the court overturned the conviction against Mr Anwar in 2004, Dr Mahathir pointed out a section in the judgment where the judges found that homosexual activities did take place.
He said many Malaysians were confused, and believed Mr Anwar was innocent because the court had freed him.
The former PM had sacked his then deputy on the grounds that he had sodomised several employees.
But the judiciary’s credibility and independence now and stretching back to Dr Mahathir’s time have been under fire. A recent government inquiry said it found evidence of improper influence in the appointment of judges in the late 1990s, when Dr Mahathir was premier.
Mr Anwar has always maintained that his sacking was politically motivated.
But yesterday, Dr Mahathir said: ‘The technicalities may not be known to most people, but what is clear is that the judges believed that he had engaged in those acts.’
