KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — The 51st National Day celebration will be held on a moderate scale but with an air of pomp and splendour, said National Unity and Integration Department director-general Datuk Azman Amin Hassan.
He said although the organising committee had asked for RM80 million for the nationwide celebration, the government had approved only RM20 million.
“Despite the sluggish economy, we will make sure that the whole country especially Kuala Lumpur will be decorated with lights and national flags,” he said.
Azman, who was representing Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry secretary-general Dr Muzahet Masruri, was briefing 150 building owners in the capital on the national flag-flying and building beautification campaign in conjunction with the celebration yesterday.
Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) general manager Kamaliah Abdul Kadir said TNB was offering incentives to building owners to decorate their premises with lights for the celebration.
Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Ab Hakim Borhan meanwhile, asked building owners to to light up their premises from 7pm to midnight as well as fly the national flags during the celebration. — Bernama
