KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: A private detective has gone missing after suddenly retracting a claim that suggested links between Malaysia’s deputy prime minister and a slain Mongolian woman, a lawyer said Saturday.
Balasubramaniam Perumal, his wife and three children have mysteriously disappeared and could not be reached on their mobile phones over the past two days, said N. Surendran, a lawyer for Balasubramaniam’s nephew.
The nephew, R. Kumaresan, has lodged a report with police over the disappearance of his uncle and family, he said.
“His house has been abandoned. Bala and his family have been incommunicado, and this is highly unusual because he is very close to his nephew. They are worried about his safety,” Surendran told The Associated Press.
Balasubramaniam dropped a political bombshell on Thursday by stating in a sworn declaration that he was told Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak had sex with Altantuya Shaariibuu, a 28-year-old Mongolian translator who was shot and killed Oct. 19, 2006. — iht
